Is Duty Enough Reason to Live a Lie?

Dear John is a 2010 film adapted from Nicholas Sparks’ 11th novel. I felt a little confused about the story, especially about the leading actress. Is love selfless or selfish? Two parts of me fight against each other.

Pros: Love is selfless. We all know John loves Savannah, but Tim and Alan love her even more. Actually, they are in desperate need of Savannah’s love. Kind and generous, how cruel it would be for Savannah to see autistic Alan were to be left alone in the world. Her universal love drives her to write the break-up letter and shoulder all the sufferings and pains by herself. Duty overweighs love. Savannah told John:”Just hearing your voice, I would have changed my mind.” Her love is definitely based on sense. Love and marriage are two different things. Marriage is sort of sacrificial love, meaning responsibility and sharing weal and woe, while love is for pure pleasure.

Here comes Valentine’s day, I’d like to recommend a classic affactional film for you and your lover. Enjoy~

Director: Nick Cassavetes
Cast: Ryan Gosling, Rachel McAdams, Gena Rowlands

Adapted from a bestselling novel, The Notebook is the simple story of a privileged young woman who falls in love with a inferior boy.
The story has an unusual framework: it begins at a nursing home, where an elderly woman suffering from dementia is paid a visit by a man who offers to read her a story. As the film develops – mostly in amber-hued flashbacks to the 1940s – it becomes apparent that the older man and woman have a pivotal stake in the following story.
The main action revolves around 17-year old Allie Hamilton, (more…)

Film: Sleepless in Seattle
Director: Nora Ephron
Actors:Tom Hanks …..Sam Baldwin
Meg Ryan …..Annie Reed
Bill Pullman …..Walter
Ross Malinger …..Jonah Baldwin
Rosie O’Donnell …..Becky

Nora Ephron’s “Sleepless in Seattle” is a feather-light romantic comedy about two lovers who meet for the first time in the last reel. It’s a stunt, but it’s a stunt that works far more effectively than anybody in his right mind has reason to expect. Not since “Love Story” has there been a movie that so shrewdly and predictably manipulated the emotions for such entertaining effect. Be warned, though: “Sleepless in Seattle” is a movie you may hate yourself in the morning for having loved the night before.

The situation is this: the recently widowed Sam Baldwin (Tom Hanks), a successful architect, has moved to Seattle from Chicago to try to assuage his sorrow. One night, his 8-year-old son, Jonah (Ross Malinger), calls a late-night radio talk-show psychiatrist. It is Christmas, and the boy is worried about his dad. The furious, embarrassed Sam then gets on the phone. Before he realizes it, he’s talking about his perfect marriage before a large portion of the United States population…

Love Yourself First

“Mary Dinkle’s eyes were the color of muddy puddles. Her birthmark, the color of poo.” Following the aside, a little girl with freckles jumps into our eyes. The small village she lives in is quiet and plain, so are the villagers. Born as an accident, Mary has never gained enough love and care from her parents.

Actually, both of her parents are a little bit morbid. Her father always plays with stuff birds alone, while her wobbly mother is addicted to sherry. Poor Mary feels confused about all the things around her and eagerly hopes there is a friend to share and tell.
Meanwhile, Max, a severely obese man with Asperger’s Syndrome is suffering from the chaos of New York. Just like Mary, he adores chocolate, watching ‘The Noblets’, and feeling confuzzled (an original word created by his own, the combination of “confuse” and “puzzle”) about the world. Mary and Max live in total different environment, but they do share some experiences and keen feelings, such as broken family, loneliness, thus beginning their friendship through letters.
